Hesperus Dimension - Rocking.gr webzine

Admittedly, it's been a while since I last heard a black metal album  
of any given sub-genre, and Hesperus Dimension's latest offering  
immediately caught my attention, initially due to its cover artwork,  
and the whole ambience suggested therein. I can't precicely put my  
finger on it, but it gave me the same feeling as Rotting Christ's  
Khronos when it was first released.

These experimenting Poles' mCD, The Cyclothymic Panopticon, captures  
Hesperus Dimension's essense in its entirety in a relatively short  
time. Within the 25 minutes the release lasts, one can distinguish  
many of Hesperus Dimension's interesting influences. Some of these  
include Arcturus, Mayhem, Thorns, Dimmu Borgir, as well as Kovenant or  
Ephel Duath. Even though the aforementioned bands are well-known in  
the scene (having black metal at their core, with some more than  
others), Hesperus Dimension enrich said genre with a variety of  
elements from other music genres.

I am not aware whether this was Hesperus Dimension's primary goal, but  
The Cyclothymic Panopticon is quite fluent, and is akin to a movie  
soundtrack. It is quite a sound & compact release, with its songs  
having solid compositions, as well as short tracks of 1 or 2 minutes  
that help in giving a darker shade to the music found therein. Using a  
saxophone in the opening track seemed very inviting for anyone trying  
to avoid standardised black metal. The compositions therein do not  
regurgitate themes of the aforementioned bands, but simply ideas that  
contain a portion of their magic.

If Hesperus Dimension do indeed continue on the path they've chosen,  
they have the potential to reach Arcturus' level in the future, or  
even surpussing it. However, The Cyclothymic Panopticon is not La  
Masquerade Infernale. Who'd anticipate such a thing, anyway? Until we  
meet with the Poles again, we'll have to suffice with this very good  
release.

Είναι αλήθεια ότι είχα καιρό να ακούσω black metal δίσκο οποιουδήποτε παρακλαδιού και ομολογώ πως το νέο πόνημα των Hesperus Dimension μου προκάλεσε το ενδιαφέρον εξαρχής με το ιδιαίτερο εξώφυλλο του και την ατμόσφαιρα η οποία το περιέβαλε. Δεν ξέρω για ποιον ακριβώς λόγο, αλλά μου έβγαζε το ίδιο συναίσθημα με το εκπληκτικό "Khronos" των δικών μας Rotting Christ.

Για την ακρίβεια το "The Cyclothymic Panopticon" πρόκειται για ένα MCD των πειραματιζόμενων Πολωνών, το οποίο επιχειρεί να φανερώσει τι εστί Hesperus Dimension σε ένα σχετικά μικρό χρονικό διάστημα. Στα 25 λεπτά διάρκειας του μίνι δίσκου, αναγνωρίζει κανείς στον ήχο των Hesperus Dimension πολλά και ενδιαφέροντα συγκροτήματα. Ορισμένα από αυτά που μου έρχονται στο νου μετά τις πρώτες ακροάσεις είναι οι Arcturus, οι Mayhem, οι Thorns, οι Dimmu Borgir αλλά και οι Kovenant ή οι Ephel Duath. Μπάντες ως επί το πλείστον καταξιωμένες στο χώρο τους, έχοντας κύριο στοιχείο της μουσικής τους το black metal και άλλες λιγότερο, άλλες περισσότερο, το εμπλουτίζουν με διάφορα στοιχεία δανεισμένα από διάφορα άλλα είδη μουσικής.

Δε γνωρίζω αν στόχος της μπάντας ήταν αυτός, αλλά το "The Cyclothymic Panopticon" κυλάει σαν άκουσμα όπως το soundtrack μιας ταινίας. Ενιαίο και συμπαγές, περιέχει κομμάτια συνθετικά άρτια καθώς και ορισμένα συμπληρωματικά του ενός ή δύο λεπτών, που προσδίδουν μια πιο σκοτεινή χροιά στη μουσική τους. Η χρήση του σαξοφώνου στο πρώτο κομμάτι είναι δελεαστική για όποιον αναζητά κάτι που ξεφεύγει από τα όρια του στεγνού και σκληροπυρηνικού black metal. Οι συνθέσεις δεν αποτελούν ένα ανακάτεμα των προαναφερθέντων συγκροτημάτων, αλλά ιδέες οι οποίες περιέχουν ένα ποσοστό της μαγείας τους.

Αν συνεχίσουν έτσι, οι Hesperus Dimension έχουν τη δυνατότητα να φτάσουν κάποια στιγμή στο επίπεδο που βρίσκονται οι Arcturus ή ακόμα και να τους ξεπεράσουν. Ωστόσο, το "The Cyclothymic Panopticon" δεν είναι ένα "La Masquerade Infernale". Ποιος θα περίμενε κάτι τέτοιο εξάλλου; Μέχρι το επόμενο βήμα των Πολωνών, θα βολευτούμε μια χαρά με το παρόν δισκάκι.
