Hesperus Dimension - Lords Of Metal webzine

“The ‘r’ has returned this month”, my ancient aunts always sigh in September, counting on the climate becoming colder outdoors. It should point out that there is more rain. Looking back on July and August I wonder where the logic is in these remarks, since it always rains in Holland. That’s what you get for having a humid climate for we live by the sea. They should have emigrated to Canada when they got the chance. But all well, given the fact that Holland is economically the healthiest country in Europe, we have to take into consideration that a lot of Polish workers will come to our country. What the Turks and Moroccans were in the fifties, sixties and seventies are the Polaks today. Yeah, and the polish people we want here, are not there too often. We like to see Vader and another band I love to see is Hesperus Dimension.

Hesperus Dimension consist for a great deal of ex-Nocturn members and they play a piercing combination of black metal, mixed with death metal and EBM. EBM? Electronic Body Music. A sort of industrial dance music. A lot of gothic bands love to use EBM and in industrial it’s a common good. But to combine it with black metal? It’s possible, taking in account the mini-cd ‘The Cyclothymic Panopticon’ that sounds quite weird from time to time but is steady as a rock. It becomes quite clear with the opening track ‘The Axis Of Diagram’ in which the heavy guitars and the fierce vocals show their kinship to black metal, but the weird sounds and programmed drums refer to EBM. This combination becomes stronger in the title track, with a genuine Hellraiser intro who leads the listener straight into the Hell of Hesperus Dimension. The closing ‘Through Drowsy Daydreams’ emphasizes the strange sound of this band again. Through these songs three intros are presented that are more into the electronic side of music, but the mood is the same as the three aforementioned songs.

The production smells like homework. The music sounds dry, the drums are too low in the mix which makes you miss out in a lot of the dynamics. It doesn’t sound really spacey, which also fucks with the dynamics. The keyboards do sound spacious, which contrasts with the dry guitar/bass/vocals and soft drums. Composition-wise it’s quite fun with Hesperus Dimension, but the next time I would love to hear them with a good producer, and the same madness as on this mini-cd.

“De ‘r’ is weer in de maand”, verzuchtten oude tantes van mij altijd in september, met het oog op het kouder wordende klimaat buitenshuis. Dat zou wijzen op meer regen. Terugkijkend op juli en augustus vraag ik mij terdege af wat de logica in dergelijke opmerkingen moest zijn, want het regent nu eenmaal altijd in Nederland. Dat krijg je met een zeeklimaat, dan is de lucht een stuk vochtiger. Had je maar naar Canada moeten emigreren toen je de kans kreeg. Maar goed, met het gegeven dat Nederland economisch het meest gezonde land van Europa is, moeten we rekening houden met een toestroom van Poolse arbeiders. Wat vroeger de Turken en Marokkanen waren, zijn nu dus de Polen. Tja, en die Polen die we hier willen hebben, die laten zich niet zien. Zo hebben we Vader, die zien we hier graag. En wie ik ook wel eens hier zou willen zien, zijn Hesperus Dimension.

Hesperus Dimension bestaat voor een groot deel uit ex-Nocturn leden, en ze spelen een nogal indringende combinatie van black metal vermengd met death metal en EBM. EBM? Electronic Body Music. Een soort industrial dance muziek. Veel gothic bandjes dwepen met EBM en uiteraard in de industrial scene is EBM geen vreemde gast. Maar om het te combineren met black metal? Het kan, getuige de mini-cd ‘The Cyclothymic Panopticon’, die echt hier en daar bijzonder maf klinkt, maar wel als een huis staat. Dat wordt direct duidelijk met de opener ‘The Axis Of Diagram’, waarin de keiharde gitaren en snerpende zang direct de link met black metal blootleggen, maar de vreemde sounds en geprogrammeerde drums geven een sterk EBM karakter aan de muziek. Dat komt nog scherper naar voren in het titelnummer, waarin een waar Hellraiser introotje de luisteraar vergezeld naar de hel van Hesperus Dimension. Het afsluitende ‘Through Drowsy Daydreams’ benadrukt het vreemde geluid van dit combo nogmaals. Daar tussendoor zitten nog een stuk of drie intro’s die muzikaal meer naar het elektronische kamp overhellen, maar qua sfeer perfect bij de andere nummers passen.

De productie klinkt echter heel erg naar thuiswerk. De muziek klinkt droog, de drums zijn te zacht in de mix geplaatst, waardoor je een heel stuk dynamiek mist. Verder klinkt het niet ruimtelijk, wat de dynamiek ook niet ten goede komt. De keyboards daarentegen klinken soms wel ruimtelijk, wat een schril contrast heeft met de droge gitaren/zang/bas en te zachte drums. Compositorisch is het dikke pret met Hesperus Dimension, maar de volgende keer zou ik ze wel eens goed geproduceerd willen horen, met dezelfde waanzin als op deze mini-cd.
